Americans Adopting HIV+ Kids From Ethiopia

This article picked up from the Associated Press made front page just below the fold in the Orange County Register today. No wonder. It has created a firestorm across the internet from the moment it hit the press. Several blogs have posted about the barrage (literally hundreds) of negative, ignorant, and even hateful comments people have posted to the original article. I'm not going to post that link because I don't want to guide anyone to such ugly words, but I'll tell you what, it broke my heart to read some of these horrible statements... I couldn't get it off my mind. Why would people be so blatantly against such a beautiful act of love and mercy? It blows my mind.

BUT, I love that the issue is being highlighted right now! God bless the Hendersons, the Hehns, and families like them who are taking these lovely little ones who would surely die if they stayed in their home country and giving them a family! May they be weighed down with jeweled crowns in Heaven!

I don't know if the Lord plans to entrust an HIV+ child to us someday, but if He did I'd say, "Hallelujah!" and embrace that little babe as if he/she was bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh!

I just read that article in the OC Register. I am amazed at how brave these families are. I'm so glad there are people who are called to do this. It is frustrating when people speak from ignorrance. Thanks for posting this Laurie

You are so great - I just love your posts! I may have mentioned this, but we're considering a trip to San Diego or L.A. for the kids' fall break (week of Oct. 6th). Are you all and the Yates' close to either of those places? We need to MEET!

EVERY child deserves to have a family and to be loved!! ALL children need to hear the words "i love you"!!!
Why would anybody have something negative to say about a family doing just that...loving a child that needs to be loved???
Some people are so hurtful! It just breaks my heart to hear that people were leaving negative comments about such an amazing story.

I follow Erins blog and the fall out from this story is just awful. They are such a warm loving family. They treasure each of their kids. ALL kids deserve to be treasured and loved AND have receive medical care! These kids are just kids...who happen to take meds everyday :) Thanks for posting it.

Wow--I don't even want to know what negative things were said. I think it's amazing! I was just reading a book which talked about how in the west, HIV/AIDs is a disease that is treated/managed, whereas in the developing world, it is a death sentence.

Oh my goodness, that is just sad! How can folks look at a sickness and forget the fact that there is a heart of an innocent child involved. Statements like that just reinforce that we live in a fallen world....

It' always a shock to me that people can be so cruel in their responses, and evil..and yet I guess that's always been in the world. I love reading about these families that have just embraced all that God has brought to them..I love being educated, too, about HIV/AIDS. Thanks for sharing.

I as well don't want to see those negative comments- I saw some online regarding the recent hunger in Ethiopia and those have stuck with me, and it breaks my heart that there are so many people out there (hopefully it's actually just a few who make themselves all too visible) who don't understand the sacrificial love of these families who are doing such wonderful things!

Laurie, Thanks for this post. Our talk today at church was on a world view of life vs an eternal view of life. So awesome to read of a family with an eternal vision ! That is awesome!!
